FAQ
Your questions, answered
We have gathered the questions patients ask most while preparing for a hair transplant, organized by consultation, surgery, and aftercare. You can find more detail on the guide pages below, and anything that varies by individual condition is reviewed together during your consultation.
CONSULTATION
Consultation, Design & Screening
QHow does the consultation work?
AThe same medical team handles everything from consultation to surgery and aftercare. We take a history of past conditions and current medications, look at the shape of your head and existing density, draw the hairline out in person, and decide the design together with you.
QHow many grafts (follicles) do I need?
AThe amount needed depends on the extent of hair loss, your existing density, and the design you want, so we plan it for each individual through consultation and screening. Modi Hair Plant counts both the number of follicles and the number of hairs when planning, and after surgery we provide a graft-count certificate summarizing the follicles used.
QCould surgery be postponed based on the screening?
AA hair transplant is not emergency surgery — it is better for graft survival when your body is in good condition. We check fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and more on the day of surgery, and if you have uncontrolled diabetes we advise treating it first and postponing for at least a month. Conditions such as gout, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver, and blood pressure can be managed beforehand so that surgery is possible.
SURGERY
Surgery — Shaving, Scarring & Follicle Preservation
QDo I have to shave my head?
AWe divide the approach into shave-free, minimal-shave, and line-shave depending on your situation. The shave-free method cuts nothing other than the follicles being harvested, so it is the least noticeable, while the minimal-shave method is lighter on cost. We decide together in your consultation which method suits you.
QWill there be scarring?
ANo hair transplant — incision or non-incision — leaves no scar at all. With the non-incision method, follicles are harvested one by one with a small punch, so the scarring is hard to notice.
QHow are the harvested follicles preserved?
AModi Hair Plant harvests all the follicles, sorts them by thickness and number of hairs, and then implants them. Follicles outside the body are cooled in a dedicated cooler and kept in an organ-transplant preservation solution (HTK) to maintain their condition until just before implantation.
AFTERCARE
Aftercare
QWhat does recovery look like?
AYou visit the clinic the next day to have the dressing removed and receive care after the first wash. Forehead swelling and a pinkish discharge on the pillow may appear in the first three days, and until two weeks you wash the grafted area with the gauze-wash method. After two weeks, graft survival is largely decided and you can wash freely, with follow-up visits at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.
QWhen can I wash my hair?
AThe first wash is done at the clinic the day after surgery. For the first two weeks, you protect the grafted follicles with the gauze-wash method — applying the dressing shampoo, covering it with damp gauze to soften it, then rinsing with lukewarm water — and after two weeks you can wash freely.
QWhen can I exercise?
AWithin the first two weeks, we recommend only light walking that does not greatly raise your heart rate or blood pressure. High-intensity exercise and bending to lift heavy objects are best started after a follow-up check — from two weeks for the non-incision method and from four weeks for the incision method.
QWhen can I drink alcohol or smoke?
AAlcohol and smoking can affect graft survival, so we recommend no alcohol for one week and no smoking for two weeks. For meals, focus on protein-rich lean meat, fish, nuts, and vegetables, and it is best to avoid food that is too salty or spicy as well as fried food.
The above is general guidance and may vary by individual condition. Please confirm an accurate diagnosis and plan through a consultation.
