Can scalp seborrheic dermatitis and itching lead to hair loss if left untreated?

Various signs of aging appear in our bodies as time passes, and among them, quite a few people are troubled by 'hair loss,' a condition in which an abnormally large amount of hair falls out. In fact, the number of younger patients with hair loss has been increasing recently. Hair loss is attributed not only to genetic factors but also to irregular eating and sleeping habits, lack of exercise, excessive dieting, and stress.

In addition, some analyses suggest that seborrheic dermatitis, which causes a rash similar to acne, raises the likelihood of hair loss occurring.

Due to problems with hormone secretion, seborrheic dermatitis can develop not only on the face but also on the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease that causes itchy flaking and red erythema. When the sebaceous glands located next to the hair follicles are under stress, sebum secretion becomes excessive, resulting in an oily scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is the condition that appears when dandruff-causing fungi break down this oil component and produce inflammatory substances.

Scalp seborrheic dermatitis is thicker than seborrheic dermatitis occurring on other areas, and as inflammation recurs, the itching becomes severe. Because this can lead not only to symptoms such as dandruff and flaking but also become a major cause of hair loss, early response is important.

If seborrheic dermatitis, a type of eczematous dermatitis, appears on the scalp, it is advisable to visit a clinic and receive treatment early. If the symptoms are not severe, improvement may be expected with medication and laser treatment.

If the condition has worsened somewhat, scalp Botox or PDRN injection treatment may also help. If hair loss has already progressed significantly, hair transplant surgery may be considered. A hair transplant is a treatment method in which hair from the occipital area is moved to the area of hair loss so that new hair can grow.

When choosing a clinic for a hair transplant, one should carefully consider factors such as whether the survival rate of the transplanted hair settling into the scalp is high, whether the clinic has hair transplant know-how, how the hair transplant process proceeds, whether the procedure is performed after carefully checking the patient's appearance and image as well as the direction and angle of the existing hair, and whether a systematic aftercare program is in place following surgery to support a high survival rate, before making a careful decision.

Yoo Hwa-jung, Director of Modi Hair Plant Clinic, advised, “If you have a scalp condition such as scalp seborrheic dermatitis, the survival rate may be lower even after a hair transplant, and the possibility of hair loss occurring outside the transplanted area may increase,” adding, “For successful treatment, it is important to receive appropriate treatment suited to the progression and symptoms of the scalp condition through consultation with medical staff.”
