Rise in hair transplant revision surgeries… Systematic aftercare is key

Hair loss, once known as a concern exclusive to middle-aged and older men, has become a major worry not only for women but also for younger people in their 20s and 30s.

While genetic factors were the main cause of hair loss in the past, the number of people reporting hair loss symptoms due to various external environmental factors such as pregnancy and childbirth, dyeing, and stress has recently increased.

Reflecting this, the related market—from anti-hair loss shampoos to nutritional supplements and treatment devices—is also growing significantly. In particular, the number of people considering medical procedures such as hair transplants for fundamental improvement of hair loss symptoms is increasing.

A hair transplant is a method of transplanting healthy hair from the back of the head to the area affected by hair loss. Among these, non-incision hair transplant is characterized by extracting only the necessary hair follicles one by one without incising the back of the head, causing almost no pain, and leaving no scars after surgery since no scalpel is used.

This is performed by extracting hair follicles with a special punch of 0.9mm or less in diameter. Many patients worry that the density at the back of the head will decrease during a non-incision hair transplant, but when a small special punch of 0.9mm or less in diameter is used, adjacent hair follicles are not injured during the hair extraction process, so patients can undergo non-incision hair transplant surgery with peace of mind, without worrying about accompanying hair loss or decreased density at the back of the head.

However, for any condition, treatment must be carried out according to the accurate cause and symptoms in order to expect a more satisfactory result. If a hair transplant is forced excessively, low hair density can make the scalp show through excessively, or failure to consider the hairline design can produce an unnatural appearance, resulting in unsatisfactory outcomes.

Yoo Hwa-jung, Director of Modi Hair Plant Clinic, advised, "As demand for hair transplants has recently increased, cases of revision surgery are also increasing, so caution is needed," and "In the case of hair transplant revision surgery, the difficulty is higher than the first surgery, so it is important to choose a hospital with abundant clinical experience and know-how. Also, if continuing hair loss symptoms after the first surgery are left unaddressed, the amount of hair that needs to be transplanted increases, so it is better to find an appropriate treatment method early and improve the condition."

In particular, non-incision hair transplant is drawing attention as a method well-suited for hair transplant revision surgery, where the incision method cannot be performed after multiple hair transplants. In hair transplant revision surgery, it is important to consider not just a temporary graft survival rate but a permanently maintained graft survival rate. In addition, through sufficient consultation with the medical staff, a surgical plan should be established that considers the individual's needs as well as the medical staff's opinion on the hairline suited to the individual.

Furthermore, to prevent revision surgery from leading to yet another revision, systematic aftercare following surgery is above all important. Accordingly, along with the hospital's aftercare system, one should diligently follow the management instructions given by the hospital and continuously make efforts to strengthen hair density, such as undergoing regular checkups.
