Hair transplants that celebrities openly undergo — what should you be aware of?

The potential hair loss population in Korea is estimated at approximately 10 million people. In fact, according to a survey by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of hair loss patients in Korea in 2019 was 233,628, a 12% increase compared to 2015 (208,534). In particular, the hair loss population among younger people and women is reported to be increasing rapidly.

Hair loss is a condition for which genetic factors, along with excessive stress, are cited as the main causes. Excessive stress causes blood vessels to constrict, hindering the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, and hair loss is accelerated as a result.

As the hair loss population grows, social perceptions are also changing. In the past, there was a strong tendency to hide hair loss, but recently perceptions of hair loss have been changing, with people openly admitting to hair loss or freely sharing their hair transplant reviews.

In fact, there are quite a few cases of "hair loss coming out," in which not only many male celebrities but also female celebrities have revealed on public broadcasting that they received hair transplants to improve a wide forehead or M-shaped hair loss caused by hair loss.

Indeed, hair transplantation is a procedure sought not only by celebrities but also by the general public, with the advantages that the effect lasts semi-permanently after a single procedure and that the results can be confirmed right away.

However, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is advisable to have sufficient consultation in advance regarding scalp characteristics and conditions, which differ from person to person, as well as the number of hair follicles required for transplantation. What deserves particular attention is the graft survival rate of the transplanted hair follicles. How stably the transplanted follicles settle in becomes the yardstick for judging whether the procedure was successful.

Director Yoo Hwa-jung of Modi Hair Plant said, "Because there are various factors that can raise the graft survival rate, it is necessary to check whether systems such as real-time microscope monitoring, special preservation solution, high-magnification microscopes, and a large number of low-temperature moisture devices have been put in place," and explained, "As measures to raise the graft survival rate, during the hair transplant procedure an IV fluid mixing a blood circulation improver, antioxidants, and vitamins is administered, and PDRN is injected intradermally into the transplanted area, so that a high graft survival rate can be confirmed at 2 weeks after surgery." He added, "You should carefully check not only the medical team's hair transplant technical skill but also their know-how, the surgical environment, and whether aftercare is provided, and choose a clinic carefully."
