Crown hair loss — being complacent because you're a woman or young?

[Director Yoo Hwa-jung Column] During changing seasons with large temperature swings, it is not only the skin that needs care. The scalp and hair can also easily become sensitive during this period, requiring careful attention. In particular, as the young hair loss population has increased significantly these days, among patients who visited the hospital for hair loss treatment last year, the proportion of women in their 30s was higher compared to the previous year. Hair loss symptoms in women in their 30s—a relatively young age group—can inevitably cause even greater psychological distress.

Hair loss is stressful in itself due to thinning hair, but it can also make one look older, cause discomfort about others' gazes, and in severe cases lead to psychological distress, so consistent management is needed. The problem is that the majority of women experiencing hair loss symptoms leave it untreated, often causing the symptoms to worsen. This is because, as hair loss is regarded as something exclusive to men, even when they see abnormal hair shedding, they think that as women they are unrelated to hair loss.

However, women can also develop hair loss for various reasons such as stress, dieting or unbalanced nutrition, and decreased female hormones, so caution is needed. Hair loss can appear in various forms depending on how it progresses, and among them, the number of women concerned about crown hair loss has been increasing recently.

The hair tends to thin overall, with hair also decreasing toward the back of the head. As hair loss begins around the part line, it may not be noticeable from the front, but from the back the exposed scalp can be clearly seen. As a result, hair loss is often not detected even though the symptoms are progressing, so if there is any suspicion, it is advisable to visit a hospital early for treatment.

Treatment methods can be divided into non-surgical methods and surgical methods depending on the degree of progression. In mild cases, symptom improvement can be expected through medication and laser treatment. However, if the condition has worsened somewhat, non-incision hair transplant and procedures using poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) ingredient can be considered. Non-incision hair transplant is a method in which hair follicles are carefully harvested one by one without incision and suturing and transplanted into the hair loss area, while PLLA treatment is a method in which a thread made of 100% PLLA ingredient is injected directly into the scalp to produce a localized care effect.

As such, since non-incision hair transplant has no incision and suturing process, it reduces concerns about side effects such as pain, scarring, secondary infection, and tightness at the back of the head. However, since the hair harvesting and transplant process differs from hospital to hospital, which can lead to differences in graft survival rate, it is important to first have sufficient consultation with the medical staff.
