Crown hair loss—do you let your guard down just because you're a woman or young?

[Director Yoo Hwa-jeong's column] During seasonal transitions with large temperature swings, it is not only the skin that needs care. The scalp and hair can also become sensitive during this period, requiring careful management. Especially these days, when the young hair loss population has notably increased, among patients who actually visited hospitals for hair loss treatment last year, the proportion of women in their 30s rose compared to the previous year. For women in their 30s, who belong to a relatively younger age group, hair loss symptoms inevitably bring even greater psychological distress.

Hair loss is stressful in itself due to sparse hair, but it can also make one look older, and beyond the discomfort of others' gaze, in severe cases it can lead to psychological distress, so consistent management is needed. The problem is that the majority of women experiencing hair loss symptoms often neglect it, allowing the symptoms to worsen. This is because hair loss is regarded as something exclusive to men, so even when seeing abnormally falling hair, they think they are women and therefore unrelated to hair loss.

However, women also need to be careful, as hair loss can occur due to various causes such as stress, dieting or unbalanced nutritional intake, and decreased female hormones. Hair loss can appear in various ways depending on its progression pattern, and among these, the number of women troubled by crown hair loss has recently been increasing.

Overall, the hair tends to thin, with hair decreasing even toward the back of the head. As the hair loss starts centered around the parting, it may not be noticeable when viewed from the front, but from behind the exposed scalp can be clearly seen. As a result, there are many cases where people fail to notice that hair loss symptoms are progressing, so if there is any suspicion, it is advisable to visit a hospital early for treatment.

Treatment methods can be divided into non-surgical methods and surgical methods depending on the degree of progression. If it is not severe, improvement of symptoms can be expected through medication treatment and laser treatment. However, if the condition has somewhat worsened, non-incision hair transplant and procedures using poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) ingredient can be considered. Non-incision hair transplant is a method of carefully harvesting hair follicles one by one without incision and suturing, and transplanting them to the hair loss area, while PLLA treatment is a method of directly injecting threads made of 100% PLLA ingredient into the scalp to locally produce a care effect.

As such, non-incision hair transplant has no incision and suturing process, reducing concerns about side effects such as pain, scars, secondary infection, and tightness at the back of the head. However, because the harvesting and transplanting process of hair differs by hospital, the graft survival rate may vary, so sufficient consultation with the medical staff first is important.
