Questions about body-hair transplant… "Can my leg hair become scalp hair?"

Hair loss is considered a factor that causes a significant appearance complex. Obesity, skin troubles, and the like can be improved through exercise, dietary therapy, and procedures, but once hair has already been lost, there is no solution other than hair transplant.

The problem is that even the hair transplant procedure itself is by no means easy. Even if someone wants to undergo a hair transplant, it can be difficult if there is not enough hair to transplant onto the head. As hair loss progresses significantly, many people experience difficulties because little hair remains in the temporal and occipital regions.

Hair transplant is divided into incisional hair transplant, in which a strip of scalp is harvested from the back and sides of the head and transplanted, and non-incision hair transplant, in which hair follicles are harvested directly by unit without incision and moved and placed into the hair-loss area.

If there is no hair to harvest in the temporal or occipital regions, a body-hair transplant—moving hair follicles from areas other than the head in a non-incision hair transplant form—can be considered. Using the beard, chest hair, leg hair, and the like is representative.

In the case of the beard, follicles located on the chin can be harvested and used for transplanting into the crown area. Above all, the density of the beard is excellent enough to be comparable to scalp hair, which provides great help for male hair transplants.

Body-hair transplant can be used not only for the scalp but also for eyebrow hair transplant. When occipital follicles are applied to eyebrow hair transplant, there is a problem of growing excessively long. On the other hand, transplanting leg body hair can yield more natural eyebrows while also minimizing the trimming period.

The problem is that body hair grows more slowly than existing scalp hair and contains many single-hair follicles, so the effect of rich volume is lower. In such cases, it is common to compensate for this limitation by transplanting it mixed into the front hairline or transplanting it into areas not easily visible, such as the crown or sides of the head.

However, body-hair transplant is a difficult method that harvests follicles from the skin of the face, chest, legs, and the like rather than from firm scalp. Even in the case of the beard, due to the characteristics of follicle direction, scarring may remain upon harvesting, so caution is needed.

To overcome such problems, it is essential to choose medical staff with abundant know-how and clinical experience in non-incision hair transplant. In addition, you should choose a medical institution with thorough aftercare that continually checks the hair graft survival rate.

Director Yoo Hwa-jung of Modi Hair Plant Clinic advised, "Body-hair transplant requires understanding the direction of body hair and the skin characteristics by area in detail, and since anesthesia is not easy, it is classified as a high-difficulty surgery," and "You should meet medical staff who can flexibly respond to problematic situations, such as mixing it into the front hair when the transplant amount is insufficient or increasing the number of transplants to enhance volume."
