Hair transplants, which celebrities openly receive—what should you be cautious about?

The potential hair loss population in Korea is estimated at approximately 10 million people. According to an actual survey by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of hair loss patients in Korea in 2019 was 233,628, a 12% increase compared to 2015 (208,534). In particular, the hair loss population among younger people and women is shown to be increasing rapidly.

Hair loss is a condition cited as being caused mainly by excessive stress along with genetic factors. Excessive stress causes blood vessels to constrict, hindering the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, which accelerates hair loss.

As the hair loss population grows, social perceptions are also changing. In the past, there was a tendency to hide hair loss, but recently perceptions toward hair loss are changing, with people freely admitting to hair loss or openly sharing their hair transplant reviews.

In fact, there are quite a few cases of "hair-loss coming out," in which not only many male celebrities but also female celebrities reveal through broadcast media that they received hair transplants to improve a wide forehead and M-shaped hair loss caused by hair loss.

In reality, a hair transplant is a procedure sought by the general public as well as celebrities, with the advantage that a single procedure provides semi-permanently lasting effects and the results can be confirmed right away.

However, to obtain satisfactory results, it is advisable to undergo sufficient consultation in advance regarding each individual's different scalp characteristics and condition, as well as the number of hair follicles needed for transplantation. What deserves particular attention is the survival rate of the transplanted hair follicles. How stably the transplanted follicles take hold serves as the measure for judging success.

Yoo Hwa-jeong, Director of Modi Hair Plant Clinic, explained, "Because there are various factors that can raise the survival rate, it is necessary to check whether systems such as real-time microscope monitoring, special preservation solution, high-magnification microscopes, and a large number of low-temperature moisture devices have been established," adding, "As a means of raising the survival rate, during the hair transplant we administer an IV mixed with blood circulation improvers, antioxidants, and vitamins, and inject PDRN into the dermis of the transplant area, so that a high survival rate can be confirmed at 2 weeks after surgery." He further added, "You should carefully check the medical team's hair transplant technical skill as well as their know-how, the surgical environment, and aftercare, and choose a hospital prudently."
