2. Why allow ample time before the consultation?
The time it takes for the scalp to recover and the time it takes for transplanted hair to grow are different. Even if the surgical area appears settled on the surface, a longer period of observation may be needed before you can confirm the desired length and density.
- Early period after surgery: Swelling or crusting may occur, and the transplanted area must be protected carefully, especially during the first 2 weeks.
- About 2–8 weeks after surgery: The transplanted hair may temporarily fall out. Around 3 months, the hair may appear thinner than before.
- About 6–9 months after surgery: The American Academy of Dermatology advises that many patients see results during this period, and that for some it may take 12 months.
- Longer follow-up: The UK NHS describes the time to see the final result as about 10–18 months.
